While on the ships, slaves communicated but there's yet to be any historical evidence to prove it.
In an effort to prevent resistance during the transatlantic slave trade, slaves were put in bondage, cramped and uncomfortable positions on ships. families and tribes were separated to disconnect any form of communication.
When slaves were brought to the colonies, most spoke different languages. Before arriving the colonies, slavers made sure that they sectioned the slaves a a manner that each person was unable to communicate with another because of language barriers.
